CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: Phoenix Rising
New Orleans, LA
May 17-21, 2007
A Harry Potter Symposium presented by Narrate Conferences, Inc.

Phoenix Rising, an interdisciplinary Harry Potter-themed symposium to take place May 17-21, 2007, in New Orleans, Louisiana, seeks submissions for its Artists and Authors Night, to take place during the evening of May 19, 2007. The overarching conference themes focus on rebirth, cycles, and the rise of the hero at the end of the sixth book in the series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Additionally, special attention will be given to the arts, including examinations of Harry Potter and its convergence with music, visual arts, and film. Artists and Authors Night is a special participatory event designed to examine and celebrate the creativity of the online fan base.

Artist and Authors Night participants are invited to submit in the following areas:

Fanfiction Readings: Authors may submit a single work or multiple works to be read before an audience.

Fanart Portfolios: Artists may submit a group of works, to be shown physically or electronically, before an audience.

Booths: Booth staffers will, for one hour, assist attendees in the area of their choice. Those in the beta booth will offer editing services to writers, and those in the drabble booth will write very short pieces of fiction in response to attendee requests. Those staffing the art critique booth will offer advice and assistance on artistic works. Sketch booth staffers will create quick line drawings on name badges or other small surfaces.

Gallery: Artists, both those who will be in attendance and those who will not, are invited to submit up to five works of magical, fantasy, and fan art for inclusion in the Phoenix Rising art gallery, which will be available for the run of the conference.

Submission for consideration is by online system only. No other format or contact will be accepted. The submission system is located at http://www.thephoenixrises.org/submissions/exploratory/, and information about how to prepare a submission can be found here: http://www.thephoenixrises.org/programming/exploratory/aanight/elements.html.

All submissions are due by November 1, 2006 with a response date of December 1, 2006, except for gallery decisions, which will be announced January 20, 2007. Accepted presenters in the areas of fanfiction, fanart, and booth staffing must be registered for the conference no later than February 1, 2007.
